Biographical Information

Laurie Friedman-Adler currently holds the positions of Music Teacher at Brooklyn College Academy, Assistant Professor of Clarinet studies at Hofstra University and has taught at Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, and the College of Staten Island.  Her work with the Brooklyn College Academy World Ensemble has enabled the group to experience and perform in various public/private school venues throughout NYC, Nebraska, Connecticut and Seattle, Washington. Along with teaching clarinet and various traditional and non-traditional instruments, she coaches woodwind ensembles, chamber music and has taught graduate seminars in Woodwind Techniques and Teaching Music in the Elementary and Secondary Schools.  Ms. Friedman-Adler has been invited to lecture on The Art of Making and Adjusting the Reed at California State University Sacramento, University of California at Davis and Hofstra University.  In February 2003 she was invited to Sacramento State University as a “Visiting Professor” to lecture on reed-making and give clarinet master classes. She has received grants from Project Arts, The Mier Burnstein Foundation and Bear-Stearns&Co. for the creation and performances of original narratives with music. Ms. Friedman-Adler lectured on “Reeds-Those Inconsistent Beasts!” during the 2004 All-State NYSSMA Conference.  Currently Ms. Friedman-Adler serves as a chamber music coach at The Chico-Sac Chamber Music Workshop located on the Sacramento State University campus. During the summer of 2007, Laurie Friedman-Adler was invited to attend the National Network for Educational Renewal in Seattle, Washington. She has continued to participate in the following NNER Symposiums: Charleston, West Virginia, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas, Normal, Illinois and Seattle, Washington.  Ms. Friedman-Adler’s proposal on Music-a Global Community was accepted by the NNER and was invited to present at the conference in Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas and in Seattle, Washington.  The Council of Great City Schools accepted her proposal entitled Peer Review – BCA Style and was presented in Tampa, Florida on October, 2010.  On January, 2011, Ms. Friedman-Adler was invited to be part of the Institute for Educational Inquiry (NNER –IEI)) as a scholar. For the 2011/12 NNER Conference, she was asked to be the keynote speaker.  The speech is entitled: “A Chamber of Voices-The Art of Practicing Democracy.”

Ms. Friedman-Adler has written four original narratives based on classic literature.  Her series of work include: The Pied Piper of Hamelin; Peer Gynt-A Musical Story; the Hunchback of Notre Dame; and the Time Machine.  Classic literature in original narrative form, descriptive classical music woven throughout the narrative and interpretive, visually expressive dance are the essential elements of these performance pieces.  Most of the original narratives were performed throughout the New York City area public and private schools.  The Pied Piper was performed in Sacramento, California with a supporting grant from Bear-Stearns.  Ms. Friedman-Adler’s latest work (co-authored by Deborah Pittman), Harriet and Anne, was completed in 1999.  With financial support from the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra’s Children’s Project Grant, a workshop of Harriet and Anne was staged at Sacramento State University.  In October, 2005, The New York Premiere of Harriet and Anne was performed at the Producers Club in NYC.  Vita-Nova Productions supported the premiere of the original work.  In addition to Ms. Friedman-Adler’s published narratives, she has written articles for the National Network for Educational Renewal Web Publication and the Middle College National Consortium newsletter. In May, 2011, she received a grant from Hofstra University to study the “Art of Crafting World Instruments.” Ms. Friedman-Adler studied Native American Indian Flute making with Daniel Bigay, a Cherokee/Choctaw Native Indian flute artist from Tennessee.

Laurie Friedman-Adler holds a BM degree from Manhattan School of Music, where she was a full scholarship student of Leon Russianoff.  She received her MA degree from Brooklyn College, during which she was awarded the Abraham Klotzman Memorial Scholarship.  In 1977&78 Ms. Friedman-Adler received a fellowship to the Blossom Music Festival with the Cleveland Orchestra.  In the fall of 1979, she won the audition for the Beersheva Orchestra in Israel.  Her orchestral performance experiences includes: New Jersey Pops Orchestra(present), Long Island Philharmonic(soloist-1999), Connecticut Grand Opera(1996-98), Village Light Opera(1993-present), Tulsa Ballet Orchestra(1988-89), Galliard Quintet), The Goldman Band(1987), and radio performances on WQXR, NYC, WBAI, and WCLV in Cleveland.  Ms. Friedman-Alder’s chamber music experience includes performances at:  The Austrian Embassy, the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C. (taped live by National Public Radio for broadcast throughout Europe and North America), The Frick Museum in New York and Pittsburgh, Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, and the Gardner Museum in Boston.  She performs regularly with *The Hevreh Ensemble, a professional Classical World Ensemble, playing original music written specifically for the ensemble.  In 2006 and 2011, Ms. Friedman-Adler recorded with The Hevreh Ensemble – tracks of the recordings can be heard on www.hevrehensemble.com.  The Hevreh Ensemble performed in Prague and Krakow during the 2010/2011 season.  On June 2, 2009, she was honored by WABC-TV’s Above and Beyond – Inspiring Teachers and Students award with a television special which aired on June 20, 2009. The special is still streaming on the WABC web-site.
