Scott Harshbarger, Associate Professor of English, teaches courses in British Romantic literature, American Literature, classic and modern fairy tales, and pedagogical theories of English grammar. After earning his B.A./M.A. at San Francisco State University, he received his Ph.D. at Duke University, writing his dissertation on William Wordsworth, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the oral dimension of the rhetorical tradition. He has published on Hawthorne, Wordsworth, biblical rhetoric, grammar pedagogy, and literary nationalism. In his most recent article, "Intimations of Neoteny: God and Play in Wordsworth's 1799 Prelude," published in Philosophy and Literature, he explores how the biological concept of neoteny illuminates William Wordsworth's poetic intuition that "The Child is the Father of the Man." He is currently working on a book-length study of the theme of persuasion in the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
