Bio:
Andrea Libresco is associate professor in the Department of Teaching, Literacy and Leadership at Hofstra University, where she teaches prospective and current teachers at the graduate and undergraduate levels how to teach social studies. She also teaches at the doctoral level, in the Honors College, and was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 2005. She was a high school social studies teacher and lead teacher for elementary social studies in the public schools, and was named Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies in 1997.
She has written on a variety of topics, including standardized testing, exemplary social studies teachers, children’s literature, civic engagement, and women’s history. Most recently, she was lead author of the book, Every Book is a Social Studies Book: How to Meet Standards with Picture Books, K-6 and is currently co-editor of the national journal, Social Studies and the Young Learner.
She received her B.A. in History and Political Science from Swarthmore College, her Master’s in Education from Brown University, and her Doctorate in Education from Columbia University.
