Hofstra professor’s research may lead to new treatments of cardiovascular disease, stroke

A team of scientists, including Hofstra bio-engineering professor Sina Rabbany, have devised a new method of turning embryonic stem cells into durable blood-vessel-forming cells, a breakthrough with potential to dramatically improve the treatment of diseases ranging from stroke to cardiovascular disease.

Hofstra University Celebrates Black History Month

Hofstra University will celebrate Black History Month in February with various activities, including an "Africans at Work Film Series" that will feature films such as Traces of Trade, Miles of Smiles, Years of Troubles. Students will also participate in a "City Plunge Service Learning Project" in which they will learn about poverty issues impacting the lives of New Yorkers. Discussions throughout the month include True Life: I Live in Africa and I Wanna Sex You Up: The Sexualization of African American Women.

Hofstra University Museum Presents "Children’s Pleasures: American Celebrations of Childhood"

This original exhibit, “Children’s Pleasures: American Celebrations of Childhood,” consists of 51 works by renowned American artists. The exhibit is divided into eight thematic sections and portrays children experiencing pleasures of family and friends, the world of make-believe, holiday celebrations, games and toys, outdoor play, music and dance, and childhood mischief. Children’s Pleasures is on view from February 2 through April 18, 2010 in the Hofstra University Museum’s Emily Lowe Gallery, south campus and is guest curated by Hofstra Professor of Foundations, Leadership and Policy Studies Donna Barnes, Ed.D. A curator’s talk and reception will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 1 p.m.

Hofstra Cheerleaders Win UCA National Competition

Hofstra University’s Small Co-Ed Cheerleading Team has taken top honors at the 2010 Universal Dance Association (UDA)/Universal Cheer Association (UCA) National Competition at Disney World, Orlando, FL. For more than a decade, the Pride Cheerleaders have been ranked among the nation's top 10 teams. Previously, they won the Small Co-ed Championship title in 2003, 2006, 2007, and 2009. The Cheer Team also placed second in the All Girl Partner Stunts division.
