Hofstra First Year Students Give Back As Part of Discovery Program

Hofstra University first year students will give back to the surrounding community as part of the optional Discovery Program. The class of 2013 will be the first to experience this annual program which provides students with the opportunity to get acclimated to the campus early, make friends, connect with student leaders, participate in service projects and get a jump start on their transition to college.

Hofstra University Joins The Yellow Ribbon Program to Cover Tuition Costs for Veterans of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and Their Dependents

Hofstra University has announced its participation in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. This program allows degree granting institutions of higher learning in the United States to enter into an agreement with the VA to subsidize tuition expenses for veterans of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their dependents. The institutions can contribute up to 50 percent of those expenses, and the VA will match the same amount as the institution. Tuition expenses covered under the Yellow Ribbon Program are those that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate.

A one-hour romantic comedy, The Smoking Diary, will be the inaugural production of Fat Melon Productions, a theater company started by Jean Dobie Giebel, chair of Hofstra University’s Department of Drama and Dance. The Smoking Diary, written by Loretta Dillon and directed by Professor Giebel, will open July 30, 2009, at 8 p.m. at the ATA American Theatre of Actors Chernuchin Theater, located at 314 West 54th Street, Manhattan.
