Hofstra Students Win Fox News Channel College Challenge

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- Three students from the Hofstra University School of Communication have won the 2013 Fox News Channel College Challenge. They appeared on “Fox & Friends” this morning where they were presented with a $10,000 scholarship that will be equally shared. The School of Communication also received a $10,000 award towards scholarships, grants or new equipment.

The winners are:

• Megan Corcoran, a senior majoring in Video/Television and Film, from Clarks Summit, PA
• Shannan Ferry, a junior journalism major from Little Neck, NY
• Julia Skrobak, a junior journalism major, from Bethlehem, PA

The contest required applicants to create a fair and balanced video news package examining a current issue. The students’ winning submission looked at a movement to ban horse carriages from New York City streets, and included interviews with carriage drivers, tourists, movement organizers and local politicians. Shannan served as on-air reporter, while Julia was producer and Megan was videographer and editor.

Megan, who is graduating this month, will also be able to interview for a position with Fox News Network, while Shannan and Julia are eligible for summer internships there.
