Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz Honored

Sustainable LI’s Awards Its “Getting It Done” Awards at Annual Conference

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz was awarded Sustainable LI’s “Getting It Done” Award at the organization’s Sixth Annual Conference on June 1, 2012. President Rabinowitz and Kevin Law received this honor for their work as co-chairs of the LI Regional Economic Development Council.

The LI Regional Economic Development Council (LIREDC) is one of 10 regional councils created by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to develop long-term strategic plans for economic growth.

President Rabinowitz said of the “Getting It Done” Award, “It’s a great honor to be recognized by Sustainable LI, an organization that has done so much to protect, preserve and promote smart, socially-conscious growth. The work of the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council is to find and fund projects that will drive the region’s economy for generations to come.

“It has been a privilege to serve with such a distinguished and dynamic group of people, including my co-chairman, Kevin Law, who is also being honored,” President Rabinowitz said.
Last year, Governor Cuomo created 10 Regional Councils to develop long-term strategic plans for economic growth for their regions. These councils are public-private partnerships made up of local experts and stakeholders from business, academia, local government, and non-governmental organizations, who worked together to come up with innovative economic development plans for their regions. The state awarded $785 million to the councils last year, including $101.6 million to the Long Island council. The councils will compete for another $220 million in state funding later this year.
Sustainable LI’s “Getting It Done” Awards, in their second year, recognize individuals who have identified community needs and guided projects from early concepts to successful completion.

Sustainable LI’s conference was titled “The Changing Face of Sustainability,” and it included a keynote address by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

About President Rabinowitz:

Stuart Rabinowitz was chosen by the Hofstra University Board of Trustees to serve as the eighth president of the University on December 20, 2000. Prior to his appointment, he served as dean of Hofstra University School of Law from September 1989 through June 2001. He joined the faculty of the Law School in 1972. President Rabinowitz currently holds the Andrew M. Boas and Mark L. Claster Distinguished Professor of Law.

President Rabinowitz has held positions with a number of important government and community organizations, including the Judicial Advisory Council of the State of New York Unified Court System, County of Nassau. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors for the Long Island Association, and as co-vice chair of the Long Island Regional Economic Development Committee. He has also served as a trustee of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities and on the board of directors the Long Island Technology Network. President Rabinowitz is a former member of the Nassau County Blue Ribbon Financial Review Panel and a former chair of the Nassau County Local Advisory Board. Additionally, President Rabinowitz served as a member of the Nassau County Commission on Government Revision, which was charged with drafting a new charter and a new form of government for the County. He is the recipient of the Martin Luther King Living the Dream Award, EOC; Distinguished Service in the Cause of Justice, Legal Aid Society; UJA Federation Leadership Award; the Bar Association of Nassau County Proclamation for Outstanding Service to both the legal profession and the community; the Community Service Award from the Conference of Jewish Organizations of Nassau County; and the Alumni Association of the City College of New York 2005 Townsend Harris Medal. President Rabinowitz has also been honored by the Long Island Software and Technology Network (LISTnet) and was the recipient of Networking magazine’s David Award. In 2009, he received the Chief Executive Leadership Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), District II. Claflin University presented President Rabinowitz with the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa in November 2009.
