Italian American Politics: From Fiorello LaGuardia to Andrew Cuomo

Italian-American Experience Lecture Series – Fall 2012

Tuesdays in October and November at 7 p.m.

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … The Hofstra Cultural Center presents its Fall 2012 Italian-American Experience Lecture Series with the theme “Italian American Politics: From Fiorello LaGuardia to Andrew Cuomo.” These lectures take place on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the Guthart Cultural Center Theater, located on the first floor of the Axinn Library, South Campus. Admission to all lectures in the series is free.

The Fall 2012 Italian-American Experience Lecture Series is directed by Professor of History Stanislao G. Pugliese, Hofstra Cultural Center Fellow and Queensboro UNICO Distinguished Professor of Italian. As the nation is focused on the presidential campaign and Hofstra is preparing to host the October 16th presidential debate, Dr. Pugliese says, “We decided to examine the theme of politics and the Italian American community in New York through the careers of Fiorello LaGuardia, Rudy Giuliani and Mario and Andrew Cuomo. The intersection of politics and ethnicity created some fascinating episodes in Italian American history.”

The schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, October 23
LaGuardia and D’Alessandro: NYC Mayors and the New Deal
Speaker: Salvatore LaGumina, Professor Emeritus of History
Nassau Community College, SUNY

Tuesday, October 30
Giuliani’s Italianness

Tuesday, November 6
