Hofstra University Museum Presents “Ancient Echoes in Contemporary Printmaking”

Exhibit Showcases the Art of Five New York City Printmakers

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Museum presents Ancient Echoes in Contemporary Printmaking, a compelling and innovative exhibition that employs a combination of traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques from five New York City based artists. 

This exhibit, on view January 27 through March 20, 2009 in the Hofstra University Museum’s Emily Lowe Gallery, South Campus, includes works from artists Jessica Baker, Michael Herstand, Brian Lynch, Tomomi Ono and Mary Pinto. The exhibit includes a diversity of print, from traditional lithographs to digitally manipulated photograms that reflects on the possibilities of the individual exploration and expression that is inherent in printmaking.

“With an established and long tradition of printmaking to reflect upon, the five artists in this exhibition approach the process of printed art in an individualized and contemporary way,” said Hofstra University Museum Director Beth E. Levinthal. “The subject matter will transport viewers from modern realms back to the most ancient natural elements.”

This exhibit was coordinated by Assistant Director of Exhibitions and Collections Karen T. Albert and was conceived and guest-curated by Jessica Baker, a New York City based artist and printmaker. Ms. Baker is one of the featured artists in the exhibit. A fully illustrated catalogue, with an insightful essay by Olympia Lambert accompanies the exhibit.

The five exhibiting artists will discuss their work in a program on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 1 p.m. The panel will cover technique, media, process, inspiration and the present and future direction of their art. There is a fee for this program, which will be followed by an Exhibition Reception at 3 p.m. in the Emily Lowe Gallery.
