“Latino media in Long Island must improve its reporting and stand against violence and racism,” said Journalism Adjunct Assistant Professor Javier Castaño, who is also former Editor-In-Chief of Hoy Nueva York and Managing Editor of El Diario/La Prensa.

Participants in the conference will include Chief Executive Officer of La Tribuna Hispana Emilio Ruiz, Co-Publisher of Noticia Silvana Díaz, and Digital Editor of the news website Long Island Al Dia Jesús Ríos. The keynote address will be delivered by Mario A. Murillo, chair of Hofstra’s Department of Radio, Television and Film. Murillo is a regular reporter for National Public Radio’s (NPR) Latino USA, and author of numerous books on Latino media.

Workshops in English and Spanish will be offered in the afternoon, taught by freelance reporter for Hora Hispana/New York Daily News José Bayona, Multimedia Producer for Newsday Mario Gonzalez, Internet News Manager for Newsday Shawna Van Ness, Assistant Professor of Journalism Daniel VanBenthuysen, among others. Topics to be discussed will range from Photoshop and search engine optimization to low-cost solutions to publishing and utilizing video content for the web.
