Lawrence Levy, WRHU Students Honored at Press Club of Long Island Media Awards Dinner

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Lawrence Levy, executive director of The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, took first place for column writing at the Press Club of Long Island’s annual Media Awards dinner on Thursday, June 4, and students at WRHU Radio Hofstra University took home three awards.

Mr. Levy, a former editorial writer and reporter at Newsday, won for General Interest Column for a piece written for the Albany Times Union on Hofstra, the suburbs and the presidential debate. In his acceptance speech, he dedicated the award to the memory of the late Hofstra Journalism Professor Robert Licata, who died earlier this year.

WRHU Assistant Program Director John Santucci took home a first place award for Non-Deadline News Reporting for a story on the Hempstead Plains. Student reporters Mike Leslie, Siddique Farroqi and Jon Lauder placed second for Sports Radio Reporting for “Seth Tierney Interview”. Station Manager Jenn Cefalu placed second for Radio Feature Reporting for “Bailey’s Football Fundraiser”.  

The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University is a non-partisan research institution dedicated to promoting objective, academically rigorous study of suburbia’s problems, as well as its promise. The Center will host a conference on The Diverse Suburb: History, Politics, and Prospects, October 22-24, 2009 at Hofstra.

WRHU, Radio Hofstra University, is Long Island’s oldest non-commercial radio station, broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 88.7FM and online at www.wrhu.org. 

The Press Club of Long Island is the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation’s oldest and largest profession journalism organization.
