Hofstra Museum Debuts An Art Historical Sweep

"American Perspectives: 1907-1992" Features Works Created Over an 85 Year Period

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Museum presents American Perspectives: 1907-1992, an art historical sweep that encompasses the predominant art movements of the 20th century, in the Emily Lowe Gallery from September 4 – December 14, 2007.

The exhibit, curated by the Museum’s Curator of Collections, Eleanor Rait, features thirty-six Hofstra University Museum works which were created over an 85 year period.  The works track the Modernist Art movement from Fauvism to the Regionalism and Social Realism, with a turn to Abstraction, Pop Art, Minimalism, Photo Realism and other trends.

“Through the years, the Hofstra University Museum has received gifts of exceptional art from discerning collectors, whose generosity has contributed to the growth of the collection,” said Museum Director Beth Levinthal. “In this exhibition, which enlightens the viewer through works that explore the rise of American art movements throughout the 20th century, we are treated to a choice sampling from the Museum's treasures.”

The visually compelling paintings, drawings, prints, photography and sculpture include works from artists such as Benny Andrews, Thomas Hart Benton, Imogene Cunningham Don Eddy, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Alex Katz, Alfred Maurer, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Ben Shahn, Andy Warhol, Edward Weston, and William Zorach, among other gifted American artist.
