Dr. Shashi Tharoor, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations To Speak at Hofstra University as Part of Educate ‘08
“Restoring America’s Image in the World: The Public Diplomacy Challenge” Wed., Sept. 10 at 3 p.m.
HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY, HEMPSTEAD, NY …. Shashi Tharoor, Ph.D., former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, author, and chairman of Dubai-based Afras Ventures will discuss the United States' role on the world stage at Hofstra University on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 3 p.m. in the Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus. The lecture is sponsored by The President’s Educate '08 Event Series, the Diversity Task Force, the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency, and The John D. Miller Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation.
Dr. Tharoor was the official candidate of India for the succession to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2006, and was a close second out of seven contenders in the race. His career began in 1978, when he joined the staff of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, and included key responsibilities in peace-keeping after the Cold War and as a senior adviser to the Secretary-General, as well as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information.
Dr. Tharoor is also the award-winning author of nine books, as well as hundreds of articles, op-eds and book reviews in a wide range of publications, including The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the International Herald Tribune, Time, Newsweek and The Times of India. He has served for two years as a Contributing Editor and occasional columnist for Newsweek International. He has authored a column in The Hindu since April 2001and another in The Times of India since January 2007.
