Hofstra University Dance Program to Present “Dances at an Exhibition” For the Hofstra University Museum Opening of America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures: The First 100

Part of the Dance Program’s 25th Anniversary Celebration Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 1 p.m., Dempster Hall Dance Studio, Room 209

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … In celebration of its 25th anniversary, as well as the opening of the Hofstra University Museum Exhibition America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures: The First 100, the Hofstra Dance Program will perform “Dances at an Exhibition” on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Dempster Hall Dance Studio, Room 209, South Campus. This performance will include works by members of the American Dance Guild, featuring choreography by the following modern dance artists: Ara Fitzgerald, Claudia Gitelman, Pascal Benichou, Isabel Gotzkowsky and Jon Zimmerman. Also featured:

•    Lori Belilove of the Isadora Duncan Foundation of Dance.
•    A work by Ali Pourfarrokh, director of the Eglevsky Ballet.
•    The Agnes DeMille's dream sequence duet from Oklahoma danced by New York Theatre Ballet’s Elena Zahlmann and Terrance Duncan.
•    Hofstra dance majors in an excerpt from Judith Moss’ “ARC” (a performance created for Hofstra’s Fall 2008 dance concert).
•    Students from the Vassar College dance program will appear in an on site improvisation.

The Hofstra University Museum is presenting the exhibition America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures: The First 100 in the David Filderman Gallery, south campus from September 29 to December 6, 2009.

This traveling exhibit, organized by the Dance Heritage Coalition, Inc., features panels and video clips that highlight our nation’s dance traditions from Native American dances to ballet, ballroom, jazz, modern, tap and more. The exhibit cuts across boundaries of idiom and style to embrace the talents of artists such as Alvin Ailey, Fred Astaire, Busby Berkeley, Lucia Chase, Aaron Copland, Merce Cunningham, Agnes De Mille, Isadora Duncan, Bob Fosse, Martha Graham, Gregory Hines, Doris Humphrey, Jose Limon, Arthur Murray, the Nicholas Brothers, Rudolf Nureyev, Ruth St. Denis, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Edward Villela, and numerous other luminaries.
