Hofstra University Museum Presents "Sacred to the Memory: Photographs by Robert Reinhardt"

Photographic Exhibit Explores Sacred Grounds In Scotland

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Museum presents a photographic exhibition Sacred to the Memory: Photographs by Robert Reinhardt, which explores the “sacred ground” in the cemeteries of Scotland, where each site encompasses a unique slice of history, culture, religion, art and architecture. The exhibit is on view November 7, 2008 through February 6, 2009 in the Hofstra University Museum’s Rochelle and Irwin A. Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, 10th Floor, South Campus.

This exhibit features a series of 17 photographs that capture the undiscovered beauty of long-neglected graveyards in Scotland. Once carefully manicured, nature is rapidly reclaiming the cemeteries as evidenced in a number of images.

“Through the artistry of Robert Reinhardt, this exhibition is a beautiful visual record that explores inspiring and sensitive interconnections between the temporal elements of time and history and their relationship to the changing environment,” said Director of the Hofstra University Museum Beth E. Levinthal.

Robert Reinhardt’s artwork is featured in many private and corporate collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Temple University, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, and The Royal Commission of Historical and Ancient Monuments of Scotland. His work has been included in numerous exhibits at museums and galleries throughout the United States. Over the past years, Mr. Reinhardt, has focused his attention and his camera on the cemeteries of Scotland.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Third Annual LGBT Symposium: Queer Iconography sponsored by the LGBT Studies Program and the Hofstra Cultural Center on November 7 and 8, 2008.
