Hofstra University Museum Presents an Exhibition of Works By Six Prestigious American Masters of Photography

On Location: Women Photographers from the Hofstra University Collection

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Museum presents an exhibition of photography by six renowned women photographers that will take viewers on a fascinating journey across America and to other lands. The exhibit, On Location: Women Photographers from the Hofstra University Collection, will be on display January 14, 2008 through June 27, 2008 in the David Filderman Gallery, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, 9th floor.

“The Hofstra University Museum is pleased to present this exhibition highlighting works from the Museum’s permanent collection focused on the strong and groundbreaking contributions of women to the art of photography,” said Director Beth Levinthal.  

The photographers, Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, Marilyn Bridges, Erica Lennard, and Sally Gall, all made deliberate choices in their locations for their subject matter.  Some chose to stay local while others chose to explore foreign lands.

Bernice Abbott, Diane Arbus and Mary Ellen Mark, who was recently named "Most Influential Woman Photographer of All Time" by American Photo magazine, all chose New York City and urban America as their inspiration. Marilyn Bridges, Erica Lenard and Sally Gall travel the world, discovering images in the landscapes of Europe, Asia, South America, and the United States.

All of these prestigious photographers, who were and continue to be pioneers in the male-dominated field of photography, have been featured in publications around the world including The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler, Life, Archaeology, Smithsonian, Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Interview, and Rolling Stone.
