Hofstra’s Center for Labor and Democracy Hosts Post-Election Conference

"The White House and Working America: What the 2012 Election Means for Our Jobs"

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University’s Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy will host a conference on Nov. 14, 2012 called “The White House and Working America: What the 2012 Election Means for Our Jobs” featuring elected officials, scholars, activists and policy analysts including Congressman Tim Bishop and Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute.

The day-long conference will tackle a wide range of issues related to job creation, with speakers including Congressman Tim Bishop (D-Southampton), Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., Luis Valenzuela of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance, Roger Clayman, executive director of the Long Island Federation of Labor, John Coverdale, regional director of the NYS United Teachers, and economist and author Michael Zweig.

It will be held in the Multipurpose Room, Sondra and David S. Student Center, North Campus, beginning at 10 a.m. Admission is free.

Conference sessions include:
•    10 a.m.-11:05 a.m. Government Policy and the Jobs Crisis
•    11:15 a.m.-12:40 p.m. Economic Inequality and the Labor Movement,
•    12:50 p.m.-1:45 p.m. Immigrants and Immigration Reform,
•    1:55 p.m.-2:50 p.m. Trade and Off-Shoring Jobs,
•    2:55 p.m.-4:20 p.m. Youth, Education and the Job Future

“At a time of fragile job and income growth, analysis of the employment implications of the national and local elections are very timely,” said Gregory DeFreitas Ph.D. and director of the Labor Studies program and the Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy. “As we struggle to better come to grips with a global recession, clear thinking about its main causes, full dimensions, and most effective remedies will be vitally important in shaping solutions with broadly shared benefits.”

The conference is part of Hofstra’s University’s Debate 2012 series, a slate of events organized around the university’s hosting of the second presidential debate on Oct. 16,2012. It is co-sponsored by Hofstra University Honors College, the Office of University Relations and the departments of Economics and Political Science.
