Delegates, I would like to welcome each and every one of you to HUMUNC’s Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee. My name is Katelyn Harrop and I will be serving as your committee chair.
I am a freshman at Hofstra University where I am double majoring in journalism and global studies. I am originally from McMinnville, Oregon and have grown to love Hofstra as my second home. By default, this is my first semester involved in college level Model U.N. but I was fortunate enough to represent Afghanistan in the SOCHUM committee at the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nation’s Conference in November. I was previously involved in high school level MUN for three years and served as my club’s president my senior year and vice-president the prior year. In addition to MUN, I serve as an assistant editor for the campus newspaper, The Hofstra Chronicle and am a member of several other clubs. When I’m not busy with one of my extra-curricular activities or schoolwork I enjoy writing, hiking, and listening to live music.
SOCHUM offers delegates the opportunity to discuss issues that are directly affecting individuals worldwide on a personal level. Our committee’s focus questions are based on the issues of educating women in developing nations and the right to protect. These are two incredibly relevant and in-depth topics to please read and study the background guide as well as doing some extensive research with outside sources. If you have a questions about our SOCHUM committee please feel free to contact me by email. Good luck and I look forward to meeting you all!
