Hello everyone, my name is Victoria Neely and I am your SPECPOL chairperson for Hofstra University’s second Model United Nations Conference! I am a sophomore from Hofstra University double majoring in Political Science and English with a concentration on Creative Writing and Literature. I am a very busy girl balancing work, school, writing for the Hofstra Chronicle, and involvement with Hofstra’s Model United Nations and College Republicans. I was born and raised in the Bay Area of Northern California and I have been in New York for a little over a year now, loving every second of it! I love going out and spending time with my friends, but sometimes I want nothing more than to curl up with a good book, a cup of coffee, and some peace and quiet.
My first time ever being involved with Model United Nations was my freshman year at Hofstra, and I joined having no idea what I was in for. After attending my first MUN conference at the University of Pennsylvania last year, I fell in love with it! From following parliamentary procedure, to debating with other delegates, to forming resolutions, I have gained so much knowledge and experiences that I will never forget. I am extremely proud to be a member of the secretariat for Hofstra’s second MUN conference, especially after only attending two conferences. Some of you might have more experience than I do! As this is my first time chairing a committee, I am beyond excited for what this weekend will bring us.
As the Special Political and Decolonization Committee, we have two very important topics on the table to discuss. Between UN Involvement in Election Monitoring and Child Labor in Southeast Asia, we have a lot of work to do, boys and girls. It is our job to form comprehensive solutions on the topic we choose, as well as to try to align our debate with what each country’s stance on the topic would be. I know that all of you are already overachievers, so I want you to come into this committee prepared for some substantive debate. Most importantly, as the SPECPOL committee with me as your Chair, I want you all to come into this committee prepared to have fun! I look forward to meeting all of you and guiding you through debate during this very exciting weekend. Please feel free to contact me at any time between now and the conference regarding the background guide, our topics, or even to say hello!
