The Harold E. Yuker Reference Library is a comprehensive reference collection of over 40,000 volumes, including encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, periodical indexes and abstracts, bibliographies, directories, biographical sources atlases, a pamphlet file, state-of-the-art electronic resources, and the Wydler Federal Government Depository.

The Reference Desk on the main floor of the Library is the first place to begin a research project or simply to find out where something is located. The desk is always staffed by Reference Librarians holding faculty rank who are there to assist users. These highly skilled librarians guide users in their research, helping them to develop a search strategy, identify specific reference materials and electronic resources, and use the online catalog to identify and locate books in the Axinn Library's exceptional collection of more than 1.3 million volumes.

Books in the Reference Room are listed by author, title, and subject in the online catalog, and are arranged on the shelves by their Library of Congress call numbers. Exceptions include most atlases, biographical and literary criticism sources, which are grouped together and housed on special, clearly labeled shelves. Some reference books that are in great demand, such as career guides and business directories, are kept at the Reference Desk and require personal identification before they can be used.

In addition to the many printed indexes and abstracts available to locate journal articles, the reference collection includes the most current resources in electronic technology to facilitate access to the periodical literature in thousands of journals spanning a wide spectrum of academic disciplines, as well as a variety of online informational databases and the computerized library catalogs of universities throughout the United States and the world. These electronic services are made available through a Local Area Network (LAN) of 35 workstations, which allows users to search in dozens of databases, and standalone PCs and terminals located throughout the building. Full text access is available for Newsday, Laser Disclosure (annual reports and 10K's) and Business Periodicals Ondisc (business journals). Access to most electronic databases is limited to users with current Hofstra IDs. Inquire at the Reference Desk for policies.

The Library has been an official selective depository for United States government documents and topographical maps since the mid-1960s. The federal documents collection, which includes 200,000 items in hardcopy and microform and 60,000 maps, is housed largely in the ground floor Documents Room and is supervised by a Government Documents Librarian. Selected documents of permanent importance appear in the online catalog, but a thorough search for document sources requires the use of specialized indexes and databases available in the Documents Room and on the Local Area Network. The collection includes official sources, such as the Congressional Record, Congressional hearings, presidential documents, laws and regulations, Supreme Court opinions, and treaties. A wide range of statistical sources, including the reports of the decennial census and the five-year economic censuses are also available.

To supplement these resources, additional reference services include interlibrary loan/document delivery and an extensive user education program. A computerized information retrieval service is available by appointment, and individual tutorials can be arranged upon request.

The Harold E. Yuker Reference Library, renowned for its excellent collections and commitment to outstanding service is a source of great pride to Hofstra University.
