Indexes, Abstracts, and Full-Text Research Databases

Line

Hofstra University subscribes to Research Databases in many disciplines; resources identified here are specific to computer science.

• If you find a citation for an article you wish to read and there is no direct link to it from the database you are using, please go to Journal Finder to determine if the University Library has the article in print or digitized form. If the article is not available, you may request it through InterLibrary Loan.

• If you find a citation for a book, technical report, document, or other material you wish to access and there is no direct link to it from a research database, use the Library Catalog to ascertain if the item is available in the Hofstra University Library System. If the item is not listed in the Library Catalog and you wish to borrow materials not available at the Hofstra University Library, please follow instructions for InterLibrary Loan.

Search Engines, Gateways, and Virtual Libraries

Line

Search engines, gateways, and virtual libraries provide access to web sites that have been filtered and/or evaluated in some manner for accuracy, authority and/or currency; however, users must still evaluate material with care. Evaluating Information Found on the Internet prepared by Elizabeth E. Kirk of Johns Hopkins University discusses criteria which may be used to assess information found on the Internet.

BUBL LINK: Catalogue of Internet Resources / Computer Science Research
BUBL is an Internet-based information service intended for the UK higher education community; each annotated entry on this selective list of Internet sites provides information regarding author, subject(s), Dewey Classification, and resource type. Access article abstracts, bibliographies, documents, gateways, indexes, journals and much more via this resource.

CiteSeer.IST
CiteSeer is a search engine and scientific literature digital library that focuses primarily on computer and information science literature and aims to improve the dissemination of scientific literature in the discipline. Hosted at the College of Information Science and Technology at Pennsylvania State University, CiteSeer also provides resources such as algorithms, data, metadata, services, techniques, and software that may be used to promote other digital libraries.

INFOMINE: Physical Science, Engineering, Computing & Math
INFOMINE is a virtual library of scholarly Internet resources relevant to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. It contains links to resources such as databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library catalogs, peer-reviewed articles, directories of researchers, and many other types of information.

Intute Computing Gateway
Intute Computing Gateway provides free access to high quality information on the Internet. Each resource has been evaluated and categorized by subject specialists based at UK universities, and the target audience is students, staff and researchers in higher education. Access full-text books, articles, documentation, technical reports, and much more.

Scirus
Scirus is a comprehensive science-specific search engine that enables the user to quickly pinpoint scientific, scholarly, technical data on the Internet. Developed by Elsevier, Scirus focuses on scientific content and searches preprint servers, digital archives, repositories, and patent and journal databases including arXiv.org, e-Prints, CogPrints, MIT OpenCourseWare, NASA, ScienceDirect and many other digital repositories.
