Hofstra
Receives $11.5 Million Grant
The University has been awarded an $11.5 million grant from the National
Science Foundation (NSF) that will be used to improve middle school
achievement in mathematics. Hofstra will be the lead member in a partnership
titled "The MSTP Project: Mathematics Across the MST Curriculum." (MSTP
refers to the Math, Science and Technology Partnership.) Dr. M. David
Burghardt, the Jean Nerkin Distinguished Professor of Engineering and
Chair of Computer Science at Hofstra, will serve as principal investigator
on the grant.

Hagedorn
Hall Dedicated |
 |
Hagedorn Hall, the new home to the School of Education and Allied
Human Services, was officially less than one year after a major
reconstruction project was begun. Philanthropists Amy and Horace
Hagedorn as well as New York State Senators Dean Skelos and Kemp
Hannon were on hand for the ceremony.

Hofstra
18th Most Connected Campus in U.S. |

Hofstra ranked number 18 in the 2003 "Princeton Review" for Most
Connected Campuses in the United States. "The Princeton Review,"
a New York City- based company known for its test preparation courses,
admission and education services, and books, looked at the technological
sophistication of 351 leading U.S. colleges. The rating included
responses from 106,000 college students as well as data from campus
administrators.

Dr.
Dobrin Delivers Ninth Annual Peter E. Herman Prize for Literary
Excellence |

In 1994 Peter E. Herman, seeking a way to support the study of literature,
endowed Hofstra's University College for Continuing Education with
funds to conduct a competition open to all University faculty, staff
and administration. The winner this year is Arthur Dobrin, Professor
of Humanities in the School for University Studies at Hofstra University.
Dr. Dobrin will deliver a free lecture titled, "A Cloud of Butterflies"
on Wed., Oct. 15, 2003 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. All are welcome

Continuing Education Classes Begin Oct 18 |

University College for Continuing Education (UCCE) offers several
new classes all beginning on Oct 18. They include "Self Esteem:
The Emotional Vitamin in the Recovery Process," "Motivating Yourself
to Achieve," "The Opera Novice: Carmen at the New York City Opera,"
and "The Turn of the Century Manhattan" to name just a few. All
are offered through the Department of Arts, Culture and Leisure.

Wins Homecoming Game |
 |
The Pride knocked off #19 Northeastern University 24- 14 on Sun.
Oct 12 Homecoming Game. Highlights included Vemba Bukula's 67-yard
touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to help the Hofstra Football
team seal a 24-14 win over Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at
Shuart Stadium.
