NEIGHBORHOOD CHAT TRANSCRIPT Thursday, March 22, 2001
Speaker: Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy
Thu Mar 22, 2001 07:56:49 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: Hello.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 07:57:33 PM> MODMSG MODERATOR: Welcome to the first of our monthly chat sessions sponsored by Hofstra University and the Herald Newspapers. The Congresswoman is now online.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 07:57:41 PM> MODMSG MannyS: Hello Ms. McCarthy, how are you today?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 07:58:07 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: Doing fine. Just got off the plane from Washington. Sorry to see it's raining so hard here.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 07:58:16 PM> MODMSG liexports: I applaud your stance as a New Democrat. One of the defining issues of New Democrats is their support for expanded trade, which grows jobs on LI and in NYC as we export to the world. Will you vote to support Trade Promotion Authority, which enables the President to negotiate trade deals that removes barriers to our exports.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 07:59:20 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: We are just starting that debate. In today's newspapers, there is already debate going as to how fast we are approaching fast track and when we will debate it.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 07:59:31 PM> MODMSG Walter: Does Long Island face a power shortage problem similar to California?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:00:42 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: From what we're seeing, Long Island has always had problems with power. Long Island has been growing. Our population has been growing and we do not have the power on extremely hot days...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:01:33 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: We definitely have to start looking at alternative sources. I am looking at solar heating. Wouldn't mind having a windmill selling power back to Keyspan.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:01:43 PM> MODMSG zack: with the recent school shooting today in california, what steps do you feel need to be taken to ensure the safety of our children aand to make them feel comfortable at school? I am 13 years old and am very interested in your response.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:01:48 PM> MODMSG John: I have two questions about the recent school shottings. 1. Why do you think there are such shootings these days, unlike years ago, and 2. what can we do to stop them?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:04:03 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: Yesterday, we had a committee hearing on a study that we have been doing -- an undercover operation with secret agents -- to try to find out the extent of illegal guns coming into our states. The problems in our schools, unfortunately, are multifaceted. But the main ingredient is the easy access to guns. I am planning on a forum here on Long Island in the near future, bringing in our school administrators, health care and social workers, to try to find a common solution.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:04:15 PM> MODMSG whitman: What do you think public schools can do about violence and threats betweeen students?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:06:19 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: What I have been doing for 4 years now is going into the schools on Mondays and talking to students about how they have to treat and respect each other. This starts in the lower grades and goes all the way through the high school years. We know some young people feel very stressed out and are under a lot of emotional strain. There is a support system out there... and sometimes you have to ask for help. Please remember 98% of our kids are terrific.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:06:42 PM> MODMSG MODERATOR: Several questions regarding education tax deductions:
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:06:44 PM> MODMSG The Communicator: Congresswoman McCarthy...I was wondering if you could comment on Senator Schumer Tax Deductable Tution Bill. What do you think of it and how likely is it to pass in the House and Senate? Also, do you know of any oppenents to the bill?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:06:52 PM> MODMSG angela: how do you feel about the college tax deductable bill that senstor schumer has proposed?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:07:09 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: I think it's a great idea.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:07:39 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: I think many of my colleagues know how hard it is for many students to pay for tuition and I don't want to see anyone go into debt.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:07:52 PM> MODMSG Julie: What can be done to relieve Long Island's growing traffic problem?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:08:15 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: More and more people should realize that they should take mass transit
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:08:32 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: It took me one hour and 25 minutes to get here from LaGuardia
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:08:47 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: Traffic is a really big burden for people here on Long Island.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:09:01 PM> MODMSG Katie M: Would you like to see a branch of the LIRR that would connect the north and south shore lines instead of just at Jamaica?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:09:31 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: We have very poor transportation between the north and the south...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:09:49 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: unfortunately because Nassau County is so compact...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:10:07 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: I don't know if we could get a branch going North and South
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:10:09 PM> MODMSG Julie: Do Long Islanders experience a higher than average cancer rate and, if so, what is the cause?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:10:31 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: Unfortunately Long Island cancer rate is 20% higher...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:10:45 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: we are looking into the environmental impact...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:10:55 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: we have secured money for research...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:11:07 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: it's a battle I will be fighting as long as I am in Congress.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:11:08 PM> MODMSG John: What are YOU doing about the lack of affordable housing on Long Island?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:11:51 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: I voted o n last night's budget on affordable housing that was turned down...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:12:14 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: we are looking at creating financing, so there could be lower down payments...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:12:45 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: but when the average house starts so high, we have to look at ways to reduce the initial costs to keep our...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:12:51 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: young people on Long Island.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:12:54 PM> MODMSG zack: why was it turned down?
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:13:11 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: They wanted their tax cuts first.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:13:20 PM> MODMSG Gabriel: Do you agree with allen Greenspan on lowering the interest rate only 1/2 %, or should he have made it 3/4 %
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:13:53 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: The way the market has been going, I think we all thought that he would have come...
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:14:03 PM> SPEAKER SPEAKER_Carolyn McCarthy: down 3/4 but I'm not an economist.
Thu Mar 22, 2001 08:14:05 PM> MODMSG Sherry in Florida: Dear Carolyn, I greatly admire your commitment to help our nation find the answers we need to help stop gun violence. What can we do here in the south to help? I understand the selling of illegal guns at gun shows is a major problem. Also, I have seen the beginnings of the "Safe Schools" initiatives here in Pinellas County. What advice can you give us as to how to allocate these funds given by our federal government to help schools in becoming safer environments for our children. Thank you f
