Parent and Family Orientation

Parent and Family Orientation is a day long program on the first day of New Student Orientation. Parents and families learn about first-year issues and campus life through information sessions and a luncheon with administrators. Past programs have included sessions on wellness and safety, academic curriculum and advisement, financial aid, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) issues, spiritual life on campus, life in the residence halls, commuting student programs and services, and transition issues for first-year students and their families. You will also have a chance to attend a campus tour.

Students register their parents/family members online for one of eight summer sessions: June 10, 17, 24; July 8, 15, 22, 29; or August 5, 2008.

The Orientation brochure contains a very helpful checklist for students. Please be sure your student has completed all items on the checklist before attending New Student Orientation. Do not plan to spend much time with your student during New Student Orientation; our events foster the separation process. You will be expected to say goodbye when you drop off your student on Tuesday morning and before you head to the Parent Orientation. New Student Orientation runs for three days. If you are picking up your student on the last day, please do so about two hours after the last scheduled event/appointment she or he needs to attend. Please be aware that not all students finish at the same time.

During move-in day, the first day of Welcome Week, on Thursday, August 28, 2008, family members may participate in the resource fair and President's Welcome.

Family Weekend takes place each fall and brings together students and their families in fun events that include faculty presentations, athletic events, tours of campus, a resource fair and a variety show featuring Hofstra students. This year, Family Weekend takes place Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25, 2008. You will receive a 15-percent discount if you register for Family Weekend by August 7, 2008.
