About the Program

Discover Your PathHofstra University and the Office of Student Leadership and Activities present the third annual Discovery Program! This student enrichment program brings together incoming new students by actively engaging them through service-learning, leadership development, and the exploration of their passion for community service. Participants pay a registration fee of $350 and choose a discovery path: compassion or sustainability. New students will be led by ten upper-class Discovery Leaders who have been trained to serve as facilitators and mentors for an intimate group of students.  All Discovery Leaders are past participants of the program and are a part of Hofstra's Discovery Family!

Each discovery path offers three days of hands-on experience during which participants will exercise compassion, learn to live more sustainable lives, and develop an appreciation for difference while starting on their journey towards becoming more aware of their local and global communities.  Some of the organizations that Hofstra partners with during the program are Long Island Food Not Bombs, S.T.R.O.N.G Youth, Inc., Homes for the Homeless, Sanctuary for Families, Jamaica Ash Recycling, Riverside park Fund Project, and local elementary schools. Participants will also explore Hempstead and New York City while reflecting and fulfilling some of the needs of their surrounding communities.

The Discovery Program also includes evening activities including outdoor adventure, meditation, creative arts, and guest speakers from local not-for-profit organizations.  The program is an invaluable opportunity for new students to build friendships with peers, connections to mentors, and an understanding of campus resources – all facets that assist them with their transition to college. Participants are challenged to creatively educate their peers and campus community while also being empowered to formulate an action plan for how they will continue to be involved throughout their time at Hofstra.
