Alternative Spring Break

HISTORY

While some students spend hundreds of dollars on exotic spring break trips, others spend their break making a difference in the lives of others. Hofstra’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program was founded in 2006 when the Office of Student Leadership and Activities (OSLA) collaborated with the Interfaith Center and Student Government Association to volunteer in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

ASB allows participants to do important community service work and reflect on their experiences. The trip also provides a leadership opportunity for students to experience a new place, immerse themselves in a new surrounding, engage with new people, and work together to make a meaningful change for an individual or an area. Past trip locations include: New Orleans, Philadelphia, Utah, Seattle, and El Paso, Texas!

NATIONAL PROGRAM
Serve over spring break and explore a new place! 
The Alternative Spring Break National Program allows students the opportunity to engage in a week’s worth of community service while exploring a new place somewhere in the United States. Possible projects include: volunteering at a soup kitchen, helping the homeless, building a home for a family in need, debris removal after a natural disaster, and anything else that community may need.

STAY-CATION
Make an impact and give back to the local Long Island and NYC area!
The Alternative Spring Break Stay-cation allows students the opportunity to engage in three full days of community service over spring break without having to leave the Long Island/New York City area. Possible projects include serving with a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, serving at a local soup kitchen, serving at a local animal shelter.

YOU CAN HELP OUT TOO!
Each year participants in both the National and Stay-cation programs are required to fundraise the funds needed to participate in their respective program. To learn more about how you can help by donating to the cause, click here!
