HUNGER BANQUET
Every November in the spirit of the Thanksgiving season, OSLA hosts the annual Hunger Banquet. This event is meant to challenge students to think about the effects of hunger and poverty around the world. After the banquet, a discussion is held and students are able to learn ways in which they can take action to help fight hunger in their local community. The Hunger Banquet will be held on November 19, 2013.
MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER
Every October Hofstra participates in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach. Many different teams represent Hofstra at the walk, including an OSLA team for students and staff who are not affiliated with any other Hofstra organizations participating in the walk. In 2012, 275 members of the Hofstra community attended the walk and raised over $8,600 for the American Cancer Society to help fight breast cancer. Join us in October 2013! Check back here for more information on how to sign-up in September 2013.
WALKINN TO FIGHT HUNGER
The WalkINN to Fight Hunger is an annual walk held at Hofstra University to raise awareness and money for The Mary Brennan Inn, a soup kitchen in Hempstead, NY that is a part of the Interfaith Nutrition Network’s (INN) system of soup kitchens and homeless shelters all throughout Long Island. This year’s walk will be on Saturday, April 20, 2013. The walk is open to the outside community as well as the Hofstra community. Donations are not necessary to participate, but any monetary, food, clothing or toiletry donation brought to the walk is greatly appreciated.
WORLD AIDS DAY
Every year on World AIDS Day, December 1st, OSLA hands out red awareness ribbons and other materials in the Student Center Atrium to remind community members of this global epidemic, to remember those who lost their battle with this disease, and to educate students on how to protect themselves.
