The Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is an opportunity for student for students to practice humility and compassion through service to others. The preparations and experience of this trip is a chance for Hofstra students to encounter impoverished cultures within the United States. This trip is an emotional, mental and financial commitment, as well as a sacrifice of a spring break of leisure and the comforts of home.
In 2007, 8 students attended the Alternative Spring Break trip, which involved attendance at ASB pre- and post-training sessions, and participation in several types of community service programs located on an Indian Reservation. Students volunteered in an elementary school, built a shade house and painted the interior of a home. Students were required to raise their own funds for the trip in order to promote humility and build connections with others, allowing these donors to become partners with the trip (i.e. “friend-raising”); each student raised $950 to participate.
