2013 Common Reading

Common Reading

Every year, as part of the orientation experience, we choose a book to discuss with our entering students.

This year's selection is The Good Food Revolution by Will Allen. The book focuses on Will Allen’s life and journey as an African American from a farming family, to professional basketball player, to Proctor and Gamble marketing executive, and back to urban farmer. Mr. Allen received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 2009 and is a leading voice in rethinking the agriculture industry. He has made important contributions not only to his own community, but to the diffusion of knowledge about urban agriculture across the world. Part of the book’s relevance for us is that its portrayal of urban agriculture takes place in a setting not too different from our own in Hempstead, NY. As you begin your own journey as an incoming college student we hope the book will stimulate your imagination and give you an expanded sense of what is possible.

Deposited students will be receiving this book in the mail after May 15. We expect you to read it in advance of your orientation session, so that when you arrive on campus you will be able to discuss it in a classroom setting with a member of the Hofstra faculty. The Common Reading website will have more information soon.
