Important Dates

Class of 2015
  • September 5 -  Labor Day Holiday - NO classes. University closed
  • September 6 – First Day of classes.
  • September 27 -  Conversion Day - ALL classes follow a Thursday schedule.
  • September 28  -Conversion Day - ALL classes follow a Friday schedule. No Evening classes.
  • September 29 & 30  - Classes not in session.
  • October 7 - No Evening classes.
  • October 8  - Classes not in session.
  • November 24-25  - Thanksgiving Recess - NO classes
  • December 12  - Snow/study/reading day for Undergraduate classes only. Graduate classes will meet.
  • December 13-19 – Final exams for ALL classes.
  • December 19  - Semester ends.
  • December 20 - Commencement (Subject to Change)

Your new life at Hofstra University is about to begin.  We hope that New Student Orientation and Welcome Week has prepared you for what to expect as a college student. You’ll soon discover there are many opportunities to get involved.  Take your time to learn about and take advantage of the various resources available on campus.

Join us outside The Career Center for a barbecue, livemusic, games and giveaways! The Career Center staff will be available to discuss career services and job and internship opportunities. 
 

“Focus On … ” Series: SKILLS
Monday, October 3  - 4:30 p.m. The Career Center
This workshop helps students polish existing skills and learn new strengths.

“Focus On … ” Series: VALUES
Monday, October 10, 4:30 p.m. The Career Center
Students also learn how to keep their values in consideration when determining a career path and during the job search process.

“Focus On … ” Series: INTERESTS
Monday, October 17, 4:30 p.m. The Career Center
This workshop helps students define their individual interests, both personal and academic, and discover areas in which they aremost motivated to pursue a career.
 
“Focus On … ” Series: PERSON ALITY
Monday, October 24, 4:30 p.m. The Career Center
This workshop helps students self-assess their personality utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment. Students will learn to better understand themselves and apply what they’ve learned to a career.
 
 
Career Exploration Group
Are you still undecided about what to major in? Sign up for this eight-week self-exploration program. For more information, please stop in or call The Career Center at 516-463-6060.
 
Internship Orientations
Learn all about the benefits of an internship and how to be a successful applicant. All sessions are held during Common Hour

First-Year Series: Ready, Set … Resume!
Thursday, October 13 7:30 p.m. 021 Netherlands Complex
This resume workshop for first-year students covers the basics of how to write a resume and why it is important to have one, even though graduation is a few years away. Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by the Office of Student Leadership and Activities.

Looking to get involved, the timeline below will help.

First Year Students Time Line

June – August:

Academics:

  • Attend Orientation and register for Fall schedule.
  • Buy a planner and other supplies to help you manage your time in the upcoming semester.
Social:
  • Research Hofstra’s many clubs and organizations.

September

Academics:

  • Check your Hofstra Portal for all important dates and deadlines and to make sure that you are registered for all your courses. 
  • Check class Blackboard site.
  • On your fist day of class, exchange contact information with a classmate in each class that will take notes for you in case you are absent.
  • Create master schedule for yourself by using all your syllabi including all test dates, assignment due dates, and projects.
  • Designate a study area where you can fully concentrate and not be disturbed.
  • Seek tutoring and/or attend professors’ office hours if you find you are having any difficulties in your courses. 
Events: Social:
  • Join clubs and organizations that you researched over the summer. Get involved and make the most of your time here!
  • Sign up and attend trips through the Explore Next Door program. For more information, please contact (516) 463-6914.

October – November
Academics:
  • Consider taking a Winter course.
  • Make an appointment with your Advisement Dean to speak about registering for Spring.
  • Meet with Major Advisor if already declared.
  • Pre Health and Pre Med students meet with your pre professional advisor.
  • Prepare for midterms and make sure to communicate with your professors to gage your progress.
  • Seek tutoring and/or attend professors’ office hours if you find you are having any difficulties in your courses.
Events: Social:
  • Sign up and attend trips through the Explore Next Door program. For more information, please contact (516) 463-6914.

December:
  • Finish your class assignments and prepare for finals.
  • Enjoy your winter break!

January:

Academics:

  • Complete Winter course if registered for one.
  • Prepare for upcoming Spring semester.
  • Start Spring classes.
  • Check your Hofstra Portal for all important dates and deadlines and to make sure that you are registered for all your courses.
  • Check class Blackboard site.
  • On your fist day of class, exchange contact information with a classmate in each class that will take notes for you in case you are absent.
  • Create master schedule for yourself by using all your syllabi including all test dates, assignment due dates, and projects.

  • Make a visit to the Career Center to see what resources they have to offer.
  • Make an appointment with your Advisement Dean to speak about registering for Fall and Summer classes.
  • Meet with Major Advisor if already declared.
  • Pre Health and Pre Med students meet with your pre professional advisor.
  • Prepare for midterms and make sure to communicate with your professors to gage your progress. Seek tutoring and/or attend professors’ office hours if you find you are having any difficulties in your courses.
