NEW FEDERAL GRANT PROGRAMS
Two new federal grant programs will be available for the first time for the 2006-2007 academic year. Both grants will be available to undergraduates who are Pell Grant recipients in challenging academic programs.
First- and second-year students will be awarded the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) if they attended a "rigorous" high school program and have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of their first year here at Hofstra. Grants will be $750 for first-year students and $1,300 for second-year students.
Third- and fourth-year students will be awarded the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grants (SMART) totaling $4,000 each year. Students must be enrolled in an approved mathematics, science, technology, engineering or critical foreign language program and have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Please contact the Financial Aid Office for more information at (516) 463-8000.
GRADUATE PLUS
As of July 1, 2006, graduate students will have a new federally protected opportunity for student borrowing. The newly created Graduate PLUS loan will be available for loan periods that begin on July 1, 2006, or thereafter. Since the loan is a federal financial aid program, it has some built-in options that are not generally available with private education loans. In addition, you may borrow up to the cost of attendance minus any other financial aid.
You may borrow if:
- You do not have bad credit
- You have already borrowed your eligible Stafford loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) for the year
This loan is automatically deferred during the time you are enrolled. You initiate the credit check and sign a Master Promissory Note at www.HESC.com after May 15, 2006. Please contact the Financial Aid Office at (516) 463-8000 if you have questions.
