Software Questions

The University licenses Microsoft Office for all faculty, staff and students. If you are a member of the Hofstra community you can download it from the My.Hofstra.Edu portal (click on the"My Apps" icon at the top right of the screen) or visit the Help Desk in McEwen Hall, room 108, for a copy on disk.

Faculty Computing Services provides Blackboard software for all colleges of the University; concurrent licenses for SPSS use on campus in classrooms and faculty offices; some licenses of SchoolVue for controlling classroom activities in hands-on computer classrooms; and concurrent licenses for Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and Flash) in classrooms and faculty offices. All other software is purchased and maintained by the respective departments or schools that use it. We help maintain Avid for video editing in the School of Communication, for instance, special engineering applications for that department, or Bloomberg software in the University's Trading Room. Faculty can find out what software is available to them for their teaching or research purposes here in the My.Hofstra.Edu portal.

Our sister department the Help Desk maintains all computers on campus and coordinates software installs for teaching purposes. They send a Software Survey twice a year to find out what you need in your classrooms. That Software Survey is separate from the process of obtaining new software. It allows us in the Computer Center to know which classrooms you intend to use your software in (as those may change from semester to semester).

If you wish to obtain NEW software, Faculty Computing Services is happy to provide you with purchase consulting. Contact us and we will help you find out if you already have access to the software you're looking for or a near analog, and if not, obtain the best possible price on new software. Your chair or dean will need to approve any software purchases or commercial updates.
