From College to Career
From College to Career: Your Four Year Goals
As with any other life journey, the career development journey has a beginning, middle and an end. What happens at the beginning of that journey oftentimes affects the rest of the experience. As you begin your career search, it is important that you take along one of your most vital tools – your road map. The following checklists aim to provide you with such a map.
- Freshman Year: Awareness
Career planning need not be a chaotic experience. Discovering the “perfect job” doesn’t have to happen by accident. The first step in focusing on your career direction is to assess your own personal career compass – namely your skills, interests, values, and personality. Gathering this information is critical to your decision making process. Remember, as you grow and develop during this period of learning, your interests may change. Follow the First Year Checklist to get you on your way. - Sophomore Year: Exploration
Career research is as important to career decision making as is self-assessment. The average individual spends thousands of hours of their lives at their chosen profession. Being satisfied at work involves ensuring a good fit between all the information you have uncovered about yourself from your self-assessment and your area of interest or chosen field. Follow the Sophomore Year Checklist to stay on track. - Junior Year: Experience
Put your awareness and research to work through an internship or other career related experience. Most jobs require prior relevant experience and now is the time to get it. Internships are a great way to explore a career, acquire new skills, and build your network. Follow the Junior Year Checklist to keep moving forward. - Senior Year: Transition
Building your network and developing your job search skills and strategy are key factors in the career development process. Use the connections you have made through your experiences to help you complete the journey from college to career. Follow the Senior Year Checklist to help you reach your career goals.
