The Career Center is here to give you the tools to find the opportunities that are right for you. Meet with a Career Counselor to set up your unique job search strategy today! A job-search plan maps out everything you need to do between now and graduation and ideally sets specific goals you need to accomplish along the way to keep you on track. Feel free to utilize the “To-do Lists” in the My Career Planning Handbook.
Here are a few tips to assist you with your job search.
Meet with a Career Counselor
Meet with a career counselor to discuss your full-time job search. To schedule an appointment call The Career Center at 516-463-6060.
Start Early
It is always best to prepare ahead of time instead of scrambling to get things done at or after graduation. The earlier you start, the more job-search success you'll have.
Job-Search Correspondence
Begin to work on and revise your resume, a starter cover letter, and a thank-you letter. This should be an on-going process throughout your college career. The Career Center is available for critiques of these documents during Quick Question Hours. For directions and examples of various resumes and job search correspondence please utilize our workshops, webshops on Blackboard or the My Career Planning Handbook.
Conduct Research
If you have yet to fine-tune the exact type of job you want to seek, now is the time.
- Schedule a meeting with a career counselor and discuss job titles and career paths.
- Review organization websites for information on career paths and potential jobs.
- Create a sizable list of organizations for whom you might like to work.
- Explore our suggested websites feature for industry and career research websites under Suggested Websites.
- Utilize the internet to research organizations, including professional associations in your field.
- You may consider scheduling a few informational interviews with key professionals in your field so you can ask them questions about their industry and job.
- Explore geographic preferences for work
- Determine if graduate school is a requirement
Apply
- Utilize the Pride-Career Management System (CMS). The Career Center receives thousands of jobs and internship opportunities for Hofstra students each year. Take advantage of Pride-CMS – they are looking for Hofstra students!
- Utilize industry sites, meta search engines, job posting sites, and professional organization sites. Several can be found on the Suggested Websites feature.
- If you have a list of companies you want to work for, go directly to those companies' websites and search available openings. You may consider an older -- but still excellent -- method of job-hunting: the cold-contact method, in which you call or email/mail targeted cover letters and resumes to a select group of employers, whether there is a job opening or not!
- Take advantage of The Career Center’s on campus recruitment programs throughout your final year at Hofstra.
Attend Career Fairs
Career fairs are great places to not only find job opportunities, but to conduct research and build your network. Hofstra hosts various career fairs and each year. Explore a current listing of Hofstra Career Fairs.
Network
The strongest and most important element of your job-search is your network of contacts. The majority of all job leads will come from your network. Your network includes your family, your friends, your friends' families, former bosses and coworkers, your professors, alumni, and anyone else that has a personal connection to you or someone you know. Utilize the Get Connected feature.
Prepare for and Practice Interviewing
Once the job-hunt is in full-gear, the most important skill you'll need to master is preparing for job interviews. Schedule a mock (practice) interview with The Career Center, attend an interview workshop, watch a webshop on Blackboard or read our advice tips in the My Career Planning Handbook.
Organize Key References
You'll need a select group of individuals who can speak of your skills, abilities, and accomplishments to potential employers. Ask them either on the phone or in person if they will serve as a professional reference for you. Create a formal list of references. If you need letters of recommendation, you may consider creating a credential file of Pride-CMS. For more information, utilize the Letters of Recommendation feature on this website.
