University Advisement

About the Office

Hofstra University recognizes the role of academic advising as a critical component of undergraduate education. Students are ultimately responsible for their own academic success, but the process to achieve such success is enhanced by careful and informed discussions with the appropriate professionals who work in partnership with students.
Under Student Affairs, the Center for University Advisement supports Hofstra students in the pursuit of their educational goals by assisting them in making informed academic decisions. All undergraduate students are assigned a dean in University Advisement to serve as their general academic adviser from admission to graduation. Advisement deans can help students with:

Academic program planning.
Exploration and discussion of program options.
Interpretation of Hofstra's academic policies and procedures.
Degree progress (interpreting the Degree Audit Report).
Specific academic questions and concerns (i.e. University Distribution requirements).
Applicability of transfer credits.
Campus resources.

Your assigned advisement dean is a useful source of information and guidance, and can give you the information you need to make informed choices. You should rely on your advisement dean for guidance, and as a sounding board for your ideas and concerns. The advisement process is a two-way interaction, where you and your advisement dean work together to achieve a common goal, and each party has responsibilities to fulfill in order for the process to work. You, however, have the ultimate responsibility for satisfying the entire sequence of courses required for your degree.

Once students declare a major they will be assigned to a faculty adviser within their academic department, and should contact their faculty adviser for major related advisement concerns. Throughout their journey at Hofstra, students can rely on both their deans in University Advisement and their faculty advisers to provide support for their academic endeavors.
