Academic Tip Sheet: Hofstra University Degree Overview
A Hofstra University Degree includes a combination of:
- University required courses
- Hofstra University Distribution courses
- Major specific courses
- Elective courses
University Requirements
- 6 credits (2 courses) of Writing Studies and Composition, and a Writing Proficiency Exam. Students that have received credit for WSC 001 and WSC 002 by transfer or AP credit must still pass the Hofstra Writing Proficiency Exam.
- For students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree within the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Communication, and the School of Education, foreign language is required.
There are two options:
1) Completion of level four of a previously studied/spoken language (placement exam required)
2) Special Language Option: Completion of levels 1 and 2 of a language not previously studied or spoken, plus:
A) 6 credits of language electives chosen from levels 3 and/or 4 of that language, or levels 1 and/or 2 of a different language not previously studied
OR
B) 6 credits in Linguistics, Comparative Literature, or Literature in Translation may also be used
Distribution Requirements (33 credits = 11 courses)
9 credits (3 courses) required in Humanities:
- 3 credits in Literature
- 3 credits in either Appreciation and Analysis or Literature
- 3 credits in either Appreciation and Analysis or Creative Participation
9 credits (3 courses) in Natural Science, Math/Computer Science:
- 3 credits in Natural Science
- 3 credits in Math/Computer Science
- 3 credits in either Natural Science or Math/Computer Science
9 credits (3 courses) in Social Science:
- 3 credits in Behavioral Science
- 3 credits in History/Philosophy/Religious Studies
- 3 credits in either Behavioral Science or History/Philosophy/Religious Studies
3 credits (1 course) in Cross Cultural
3 credits (1 course) in Interdisciplinary Studies (This category may also be satisfied with any other Distribution course.)
