Academic Tip Sheet: Hofstra University Degree Overview

A Hofstra University Degree includes a combination of:

  • University required courses.
  • Hofstra University Distribution courses.
  • Major specific courses.
  • Elective courses.

You may fulfill Hofstra University courses through:

  • Equivalent transfer course credit.
  • Completing courses at Hofstra University.

University Requirements:

  • Hofstra University requires 6 credits (2 courses) of English Composition, and a Writing Proficiency Exam.

For students majoring within the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Communication, and the School of Education, foreign language is required.

There are two options:

  • Completion of level four of a language that was previously taken in High School (placement exam required).
  • Completion of levels 1 and 2 of a language not previously studied in High School, plus:
    1. 6 credits of language electives chosen from levels 3 and/or 4 of that language, or levels 1 and/or 2 of a different language not previously studied in High School.
    OR
    2. 6 credits in Linguistics, Comparative Literature, or Literature in Translation may also be used.

Distribution Requirements (33 credits = 11 courses):

There is a total of 9 credits (3 courses) required in the Humanities Division.

  • A minimum of 3 credits in the Humanities Division must be in Literature.
  • A maximum of 3 credits in the Humanities Division may be in Creative Participation.
  • A choice of 3 credits in either Appreciation and Analysis or Literature.

There is a total of 9 credits (3 courses) required in the Natural Science, Math/Computer Science Division.

  • 3 credits must be in Math/Computer Science.
  • 3 credits must be in Natural Science.
  • 3 credits in either Natural Science or Math/Computer Science.

There is a total of 9 credits (3 courses) required in the Social Science Division.

  • 3 credits must be in Behavioral Social Science
  • 3 credits must be in History/Philosophy/Religion.
  • 3 credits in either Behavioral or History/Philosophy/Religion.
  • 3 credits each (2 courses) are required in the Cross Cultural and Interdisciplinary Studies Divisions.

Interdisciplinary Studies Division is considered the "wild card" category and can be satisfied with any Distribution course.
