Your Responsibilities as a Student
Welcome to the University Tutorial Program (UTP) and congratulations on your wise decision to seek the assistance of a tutor. You have taken an important step in ensuring your success this semester. The UTP Tutors and Staff will do everything possible to help you achieve your goals. However, tutoring requires teamwork. The Program works best for those students who are serious, active participants. The following list of responsibilities presents ways in which you can help us help you succeed.
- Once you receive your tutor's name and telephone number, contact him/her immediately.
- Introduce yourself.
- Establish your first meeting date, time, and place.
- Establish a way to recognize one another for your first meeting.
- Explain to your tutor the general difficulties that you are experiencing with your course work.
- Preparing for your first tutoring session:
- Make a photocopy of your course syllabus to give to your tutor.
- Become familiar with your course assignments, requirements, and due dates.
- Think about your academic goals and expectations; be prepared to share these with your tutor.
- Create an outline of your problem areas to focus on in tutoring.
- At every session:
- Keep your appointments.
- Be on time.
- Keep up with all reading and assignments.
- Come prepared to tutoring sessions with completed homework assignments.
- As you progress through the course, identify topics/material that you do not understand.
- Maintaining your relationship with the University Tutorial Program:
- If you must miss or cancel a session, it is your responsibility to contact your tutor to reschedule it.
- If you change your address/telephone number, please notify UTP immediately.
- If you no longer need a tutor, you must contact UTP to terminate the relationship.
