F-1 Practical Training Checklist

Graduated students may work for one year after graduation upon approval from United States Immigration Services (USCIS). The following forms, documents, etc. are required:

  • I-538
  • I-765
  • Original student copy of current I-20 Form (to be certified by Designated School Official)
  • All other previously-issued I-20 Forms
  • Letter written by major advisor regarding why the work is relevant to your field of study
  • $380.00 check or money order payable to USCIS
  • 2 (two) photographs: 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches, three-quarter view of face, right ear showing; no jewelry and no facial hair
  • Current Hofstra ID
  • Copy of I-94 Departure Card
  • Copy of Passport Photo Page
  • Copy of Visa
After gathering all of the above information, please call for an appointment so that we can review your paperwork to be sure that it is completed correctly. Please note that you will be receiving notification to sign and pick up your new OPT I-20. Failure to comply will result in the loss of optional practical training (OPT) benefits. It will take at least 8-10 weeks for applications to be processed by USCIS. You may not leave the country while your request is being processed.
