Graduate assistantships are opportunities for matriculated students in a Hofstra graduate program. The assistantships typically last from 9 to 10 months, and require working 20 to 25 hours per week. Evening and weekend work may be required, depending upon the position. Most positions offer up to nine (9) credits of tuition remission each semester (unless otherwise noted), with no more than 18 credits per academic year. Some assistantships also offer on campus housing, as noted. Below is an overview of each position. The Career Center

The Career Center assists students and recent graduates in finding career opportunities by serving as a facilitator for them to make connections beyond their Hofstra experience.
The Career Center is seeking a graduate assistant for the 2012-2013 academic year. The Career Center assists its diverse population of undergraduates, and graduate students and alumni with all aspects of career exploration/management and comprehensive job search strategies.
The graduate assistant will be expected to work 25 hours per week, and will receive a tuition waiver for eighteen (18) graduate credits to be disbursed during the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semester for the period of August 20, 2012 – May 20, 2013.
The graduate assistant will:
- Manage The Career Center’s Quick Question Hours by performing resume and cover letter critiques and making referrals when necessary.
- Recruit graduate student volunteers to assist during Quick Question Hours.
- Track weekly events of The Career Center and create weekly email blast to students.
- Create weekly blog entries for The Career Center.
- Assist with maintenance of office social media.
- Assist with various special events including job fairs.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate student, counseling or higher education graduate programs preferred. Candidates must have a strong attention for detail, and excellent interpersonal skills including superior listening skills. Knowledge of career trends and the job market is preferred. Proficiency in social media and Microsoft Office is necessary for this position. We are seeking candidates who have a genuine interest in career services and helping college students.

Recreation & Intramural Sports
Position: Graduate Assistant
Position assists with administration of all aspects of the campus’ recreation and intramural programs. A strong emphasis is placed on the organization and implementation of recreation/intramural sports, staff supervision and facility management. Other responsibilities include marketing and promotions, staff recruitment/training, and scheduling. Applicants should be knowledgeable about sports and possess excellent communication and organizational skills.

Student Leadership & Activities
The Office of Student Leadership and Activities enhances the co-curricular life of the Hofstra community and helps students become more aware of - and involved with - campus events.
Position: Graduate Assistant- Fraternity & Sorority Life (August 12, 2013 - May 30, 2014)
This graduate assistantship works directly with the Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Activities in implementing programming throughout the school year. Job responsibilities include: coordination of collecting all Greek Rosters and registrations and keeping records, responsible for overseeing various Greek Life Events, Fall and Spring Leadership Retreat, Greek Week, Inter-Fraternity Sorority Council Benefit Show, Veterans Day, Bid Day, Emerging New Members Program, Greek Leadership Conference, and other Greek events. Coordinate monthly publication of all Greek organization campus-wide events, and update the OSLA website as directed. Also update Greek event bulletin boards on the 1st floor of the Student Center, bi-weekly.
This person will help plan various office programs, as well as university-wide programming including Welcome Week, Fall Festival, Hofstra Celebrates the Holidays, and Hofstra Student Leadership Awards. They will also be responsible for various general office administrative tasks and be required to serve as an office representative at events during night duty hours on a weekly rotating basis.
This position requires 25 hours per week with night and weekend responsibilities. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills. Requires knowledge of Greek Life including national councils, such as NIC, NPHC, NPC, NALFO, to name a few. Must be detailed orientated, creative, and well organized. Candidate must be able to work alone and in group settings. Candidate should possess knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, as well advanced typing skills required. Applicant must be an accepted matriculated student in a graduate degree program by start date.

Position: Graduate Coordinator – Discovery Program (June – August, 2012)
This graduate coordinator will help plan and implement the first-year student service-learning program, the Discovery Program. Responsibilities include: scheduling service sites, processing financial paperwork, booking rooms, ordering food, coordinating transportation, maintaining the participant database, marketing program to students and their families, organizing participant payments, and helping with various office administrative tasks. The graduate coordinator is required to work every day during the program and training of the Discovery Leaders (August 20 – 29, 2012). Candidate should possess excellent written and oral communication skills and have proficient computer skills. Driver’s license preferred.

Position: Graduate Assistant – Service and Leadership Development (August 2012 – May 2013)
This graduate assistant will provide support with service and leadership development programming as well as university wide programming including Welcome Week, Fall Festival, Hofstra Celebrates the Holidays, and Debate 2012. They will help plan the logistics of service trips including: processing financial paperwork, booking rooms, ordering food, coordinating transportation, etc. They will handle marketing of all events including the usage of online social media. They will help develop and update the community partnerships guide and the OSLA service and leadership websites. They will plan and implement the local spring break service program, Stay-cation. They will also be responsible for various general office administrative tasks and be required to serve as an office representative at events during night duty hours on a weekly rotating basis.
This position requires 25 hours per week with night and weekend responsibilities. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills. Must be detailed orientated, creative, and well organized. Candidate must be able to work alone and in group settings. Candidate should possess knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, as well advanced typing skills required. Driver’s license preferred. Position: Graduate Assistant- Programming (August 15, 2012 - May 31, 2013)
This graduate assistantship works directly with the Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Activities in implementing programming throughout the school year. Job responsibilities include: planning Friday night activities, coordinating and attending off-campus outings for Explore Next Door, editing a weekly newsletter, assisting with the implementation of educational and wellness programming, assisting with the office care package program, helping in planning various office programs, as well as university-wide programming including Welcome Week, Fall Festival, Hofstra Celebrates the Holidays, and Debate 2012. They will also be responsible for various general office administrative tasks and be required to serve as an office representative at events during night duty hours on a weekly rotating basis.
This position requires 25 hours per week with night and weekend responsibilities. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills. Must be detailed orientated, creative, and well organized. Position: Graduate Orientation Leader for Summer Orientation (May 23-August 15, 2012)
This position provides a unique opportunity to qualified graduate students, as part of their overall educational program at Hofstra, to learn and develop leadership, mentoring, communication and teamwork skills. Applicant must be an accepted full-time matriculated student in a Hofstra University graduate degree program by fall 2012. Job responsibilities include:
- Consult and cooperate with members of entire campus community in support of the Summer Orientation Program;
- Maintain excellent communication and organizational skills, be detail oriented, have experience in an on-call capacity, be able to maintain a professional demeanor, serve as secondary contact for on-call incidents and emergencies during evenings, and be available to live in a University provided residence hall from Monday through Thursdays;
- Attend and participate in training program, emergency meetings, weekly program meetings, coffee houses, orientation events;
- Assist with check-in process and other residential-related duties;
- Maintain evening hours on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays during orientation.
- Separate from the Orientation Leader position, must additionally work as a Student Employee for up to 25 hours per week in the Student Leadership and Activities Department performing general office work, including: assigning orientation dates, maintaining orientation database, answering phone and email correspondence and must be computer proficient (MS Access and Excel a plus).
