In response to the increasing volume of spam, the Computer
Center is installing a new spam e-mail filtering system. This system will
filter out most spam and any e-mail containing viruses. You will now be
able to send and receive zip file attachments. Spam e-mail will be held
in a quarantine queue for your review.
Each morning, you will receive an e-mail with a list of
messages quarantined as spam. This message will come from the address
spamreport@hofstra.edu and contain the subject, "Hofstra
Spam Report."

The Hofstra Spam Report allows you to perform
one of three actions on each spam message:
- You can Release a message
from the quarantine to review it in your inbox. This is a ONE
TIME option and, unless you move it to the Safelist,
you will continue to see this e-mail address in quarantine.
- You can choose the Safelist
option if you want to receive mail from this e-mail address in the future.
- You can indicate that the message is
Not Spam. This option sends the message to the developers
of the spam filtering system to be reviewed and possibly create a filter
that allows this e-mail address safe passage into your e-mail inbox
in the future. Please note: You will continue to see this e-mail address
in quarantine until the review by the developers is complete.

You will receive a Hofstra Spam Report
only if a message has been considered spam by the system.
No action on your part is required to enjoy
the benefits of this new system. Spam filtering will begin on Thursday,
March 3, 2005. The changes to our mail system may take up to 3 days to
reach all mail servers on the Internet. If, after Monday, March 7, 2005,
you are still receiving spam, please contact the Help Desk at (516) 463-7777
for assistance.
