PowerPoint FAQs

How do I create a new PowerPoint presentation?

There are two ways to create a new presentation.

1.) Click File > New. Choose Blank Presentation. This will bring up a new presentation that is completely blank. You’ll create the content from scratch, without any help from the application.

2.) Click File > New. Choose From AutoContent Wizard. This will load the Presentation Wizard, which will walk you through the process of designing a presentation – including selecting a template and placing content.

How do I open an existing PowerPoint presentation?

Click File > Open. Change the “look in” drop-down menu to match the location where you saved the presentation. Select the presentation from the list, and then click Open.

How do I save a PowerPoint presentation I have been working on?

To save a PowerPoint presentation:

  • Click File > Save As. This loads the Save As dialog.
  • Change the “save in” drop-down menu to match the location where you’d like to save this presentation.
  • Give the presentation a name in the “file name” field, and then click on Save.

How do I insert a text box into my PowerPoint presentation?

  • Click Insert > Text Box.
  • Next, left-click and hold while dragging a box of the appropriate size on the slide. The text box will appear when you release the left mouse button.

How do I insert multimedia content (sounds, pictures, movies, etc.)?

  • Click Insert > Picture and then choose the type of content you’d like to insert.
  • For pictures, click on Picture, and then choose the type of picture you’d like to insert. For other types of content, click on Movies & Sounds, and then choose the type of movie or sound you’d like to place.

Can I open a PowerPoint presentation from a previous version of the software?

Yes. PowerPoint 2003 can open any file saved in a previous version of PowerPoint, such as ’97, 2000, or XP.

How do I view a presentation full-screen once I have finished it?

  • Click Slide Show > View Show.

How can I view my presentation on a computer that does not have PowerPoint installed on it?

You’ll need to “package” the presentation using the PowerPoint “Package for CD” wizard. Click on File, Package for CD. The Package for CD wizard will load and walk you through the process of packaging the presentation. You’ll need a computer with a CD burner and a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc to do this.

How do I animate text in PowerPoint?

To animate text in PowerPoint:

Right-click on the desired piece of text and choose custom animation. This will allow you to manipulate text in many different ways.

Where should I save my PowerPoint presentations?

The best place to save PowerPoint presentations, as well as files you create in any other program, is your home directory (Windows users may know this as their F: drive). This drive is backed up daily to prevent data corruption or data loss.
