What is a Web page?

A Web page is a visual form of relaying information through the Internet via a Web browser.

How do I search for information on a specific topic?

You can perform a search using a search engine. A search engine is a Web-based program that searches the Internet for Web pages using specified keywords or a phrase that you provide. The search engine returns a list of results of Web pages containing relevant information. There are many popular search engines that can be used to perform searches.
Here are the top 10 search engines according to Nielsen/NetRatings (U.S., home and work) for December 2004:

How do I use a search engine?

On the search engine Web page, type in a keyword or a phrase of the topic you are seeking information on. For example, type the words "European history" and click the search button that is provided on the page. The search engine will display a list of pages with their findings on information related to your search criteria.

I typed in a Web address (otherwise known as a URL) in the location bar. However, it did not connect. Why?

Please insure that the spelling of the Web address is correct and try the site again. After verifying that the address is correct, and if you are still not able to connect, this may be an indication that the Web server is having technical difficulties. You can either wait and try again later or contact the Web site administrator.

How do I create my own Web page?

You can use HTML, Hyper Text Markup Language, or applications such as Dreamweaver, Front Page, or Netscape Composer to generate a Web page.

How do I save an image from a Web site?

Right click on the picture you want to save and choose either "Save Target As..." or "Save Image As. ..."

I opened up my Web browser from on campus yet a page does not open. What is wrong?

The Web server may be experiencing problems. Please call the Help Desk at x3-7777.
