Printing FAQs

How do I print?

The easiest way to print is to hold down Ctrl while pressing P on the keyboard. You can also go the File menu and select Print...

How do I know if I have a local or network printer?

A network printer is attached to the Hofstra network and is shared by multiple users. A local printer is directly connected to your computer.

How do I install a network printer on an on-campus computer.

  1. Click on the Start menu, go to Settings and select Control Panel. (Some users may need to select Printers and Faxes from the Start menu. If this is the case, please skip step two).

  2. Double-click on Printers and Faxes from the Control Panel.

  3. Click on Add Printers located on the left side of the window.

  4. The Add Printer Wizard will open. Click Next.

  5. Select the radio button located next to 'A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer.' Then click Next.

  6. You will be asked "What printer do you want to connect to?" The radio button should be set to Browse as default. Click Next.

  7. Double-click through the tree starting from NDPS Controlled Access Printer > Hofstra > HU > Printers > Employees.

  8. Search for the printer you need installed. Printers are listed by each department's prefix and building number, followed by the printer model. Click the printer you need installed and click Next.

  9. You will be prompted with a security warning. Click Yes. You will need to wait approximately 30 seconds while the printer installs.

  10. After the installation is complete you will be prompted with the question of whether to set the printer as a default printer. Click either the Yes or No button, then click Next.

  11. To complete the installation process, click Finish.

Which printers do I have access to?

Most users are assigned rights to printers within their department. If you are unsure of which printer you can connect to, please contact the Help Desk.

What should I do if I can't print?

Please make sure you have a printer installed. If a printer is installed and you still cannot print, please try restarting your computer and try again; restarting the computer re-establishes any lost connection that your computer may have incurred.

What should I do if printouts appear smeared or light in color?

Smearing can occur from a bad toner cartridge. Printouts that appear light can indicate low ink in the toner catridge. In both cases, please try replacing the toner catridge.

How do I turn on my printer?

The power button is usually labeled and is found on the front, top or side of the machine.

How do I remove a paper jam?

Printer jams can occur in several locations in the printer. Check the following common locations for jams:

  • All trays
  • Any accessible panel that opens and does not require a screwdriver

Jammed paper can normally be removed by gently pulling in the direction away from the printer. If paper is unreachable or cannot be found, and the printer still reads the error "Printer Jam," please contact the Help Desk for assistance.

How can I tell if the printer is online or offline?

When a printer is online, the status on the printers LCD screen will display the word "Ready" or "Online," indicating that the printer is functioning properly and ready to receive print request. When a printer is offline, it is ready to have its settings changed and will display "offline."
