How to use FTP

FTP Icon

What is FTP?

FTP stands for "file transfer protocol". It is a client-server protocol which allows a user on one computer to transfer files back and forth from another computer over a network or the internet.

What can you use it for?

You can use FTP to move files back and forth from your home computer, your dorm computer, or a lab computer, to your personal Hofstra network disk space (also referred as your "F:" drive).

What are some examples for using FTP?

  • To download files from home you saved on your F: drive while working in the computer labs or in a class.
  • Do work at home and upload files to your F: drive so you can print and edit them in the computer labs.
  • Create web pages on your local machine and publish them by uploading them to your "public" directory on your F: drive.
