Frequently Asked Lab Questions

Can I use the phone in the lab?
No. The phones at the Student Assistant (SA) desks are for Student Computing Services (SCS) use only. Both campus and pay phones are located outside each of the labs for your use.

Can I bring food or a drink into the lab?
Food and drinks are prohibited in the computer labs.

Can I listen to any audio in the labs?
Yes, on one condition. You have to bring and use your own headphones. You must use headphones to use the audio capabilities of the lab computers!

Can I access my Hofstra e-mail from home instead of in the labs?
Yes. You can check your e-mail at home, or anywhere you can access the Internet, by logging on to the Hofstra Portal at http://my.hofstra.edu.

Is there someone in the lab who can assist me with problems?
Yes. Each lab is staffed by several professionally trained SCS computer lab SAs.

Click here for more information about the SAs.
You can also visit our Computer Lab Help page for more information about getting help in the computer labs.

The first and BEST source of help is always your instructor. Also, many departments on campus have teaching assistants and student tutors to help you with project-specific problems. Check with your instructor or department to find out what's available.

Why don't some SAs know the answer to my questions?
The SCS SAs are trained in many of the basic applications, such as Hofstra E-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. There is always more to know. There are over 200 applications on our network and each SA has a specialized area of expertise. It may be that what you are asking them is an area outside of their experience. SAs are not required to know programming languages. However, from time to time you might get lucky and find an on-duty SA who knows the language and can give you a hand. Only some of our SAs are computer science or BCIS majors.

They will always try to help you figure out a problem, but they may not always have the answer. If this is the case, they will find someone who has the answer.

Who do you hire as SAs?
All SAs are students like you. They come from all majors, not just computer-related ones. If you think you might like to work for SCS, get paid to learn about computers and help students, click here to read more about the job. You can pick up an application in the SCS office, Room 106C Calkins Hall (in the back of the Calkins Lab). You do not need to be a computer wiz! We will train you in what you need to know!
