Help Commands

Almost all Windows-based applications have a "Help" menu. This will be located on the menu bar of the application window. You can also access help by pressing the "F1" key on the keyboard or by pressing the "Ctrl" and the "H" keys together.

Like Windows-based applications, Mac-based applications also have a "Help" menu located on the menu bar of the application window. To access help using the Mac keyboard, press the "Apple" key and the "?" keys together.

Hands On

Why is the computer screen frozen?
PCs can be temperamental from time to time. If your screen freezes and there is no response from the keyboard or the mouse for several minutes, you will have to re-boot the system and start all over again. This is the very reason why it is extremely important to SAVE YOUR WORK FREQUENTLY!

Are PC and Mac computers compatible?
Well, sort of ... it's a one-way street. You can read a PC disk on a Mac, but you cannot read a Mac disk on a PC.

Which system should I use, PC or Mac?
  • If you want to do word processing, you can use PCs or Macs.
  • If you are doing course work, your instructor will tell you which system to use.
  • You can access your Hofstra e-mail account or the Internet on both PCs and Macs.
  • For most programming languages and statistical packages, you'll use PCs.
  • Most times, it's just a matter of preference.
