The fall of 1997 brought to Hofstra the most technologically savvy class of students that we have ever had. To ensure that Hofstra students are prepared for the 21st century, each dorm room is equipped with a port for each student to connect to the Hofstra Network. Access to the Hofstra Network offers e-mail service and high-speed Internet access.
The department is led by James R. Shuart, manager. The primary function of this department is to provide computer services and support to residence hall students connected to the Hofstra LAN. The ResNet team works with a number of departments to implement the computing services that are available to resident students.
The expansion of the Hofstra LAN to the North Campus residence halls uses the latest in high-speed networking technology. More than 4,000 new network ports are installed that provide each resident student with a dedicated connection to services on the LAN. Four high-speed file servers are installed to provide access to applications and disk storage. In addition, students have full access to the Internet, including World Wide Web, E-mail and news services.
