Being connected to this system provides you with super-fast access to the Internet, e-mail, the Hofstra Portal, the library card catalog and databases, and many other services! |
| |
| This document is intended to step you through all of the procedures for connecting to the network, from installing your Ethernet card to checking your e-mail. |

Ethernet may be a new term for you so we'll explain it right away. You are probably familiar with accessing the Internet using a modem and a telephone line from your home. Hofstra's network is built on a different technology called Ethernet. Some advantages:
- Ethernet connections do not require "dialing up."
- They are full-time connections (when your computer is on, you're connected).
- Similar (but faster) to a cable modem or DSL connection you might have at home.
- At Hofstra University there are no charges for subscription, setup, or technical support.
- Aside from the cost of an Ethernet card, there is no charge for this service.
- Ethernet connections are 50 times faster than traditional modem connections.
If you already connect with a cable modem or DSL at home, you probably already have an Ethernet card installed on your computer! |

Step 1: Do you have the right computer?
|
Generally speaking, most new computers (purchased within the last year) should be more than capable of going online here at Hofstra University. The following specs lists our minimum requirements if you already have a computer. Also, our recommendations if you are buying a new one.
Any new computer purchased today will probably exceed our recommendations. |
| Hofstra Recommended System Requirements: |
IBM compatible: |
Macintosh: |
- Windows XP SP2* or Windows Vista.
- 1GB of RAM .
- Intel or AMD 2.8GHz processor or better.
- CD or DVD drive.
- Free PCI expansion slot or
built-in high speed Ethernet.
Laptops: If available, we recommend the "built-in wireless" option for any new laptop purchase. Hofstra's wireless network is 802.11B/G compatible.
|
- Mac OS X or higher.
- 1GB of RAM.
- G5 processor or Intel.
- CD or DVD drive.
- Built-in high speed Ethernet.
Laptops: We recommend the built-in AirPort wireless option for any new laptop purchase.
Hofstra's wireless network is 802.11B/G compatible.
|
| *Hofstra University no longer offers support for versions of the Windows operating system released prior to Windows XP. |
| McAfee Antivirus Requirement: |
All systems MUST have McAfee Antivirus Enterprise Edition to connect to the wired or wireless network. If you do not have McAfee, Hofstra provides a free download at no cost to members of the Hofstra community. Please click for your free download of McAfee Antivirus Enterprise Edition.
Please note: If you have Norton Antivirus, or another antivirus program, they MUST be uninstalled BEFORE executing the McAfee Enterprise Edition Virus Protection download.

Step 2: Acquire an Ethernet Card |
| Once you have determined that your computer meets our requirements, you'll need to have an Ethernet Card. Most new computers have built-in Ethernet cards or can be ordered with built-in Ethernet cards. If you already purchased your computer, and it does not have an Ethernet card, one can easily be installed. Ethernet Cards can be purchased at the Hofstra Bookstore, or at most computer stores. It is very important that you get an Ethernet Card that will fit your computer. Below is a table that will guide you in determining the correct type of Ethernet card. If you are still unsure, one of our ResNet technicians will be happy to schedule an appointment with you to determine the type of Ethernet Card that would be appropriate. |
| Recommended Network Cards: |
| IBM compatible: |
Macintosh: |
PCI slots:
Linksys - LNE100-TXU
PC card slots (Laptops):
Linksys - PCM100 (for wired networks)
DLink - DWL-G650 (for wireless networks)
The Hofstra Bookstore carries the above network cards. |
All new Macintosh computers have built-in Ethernet network cards. If your Macintosh does not have built-in Ethernet, or youre not sure, then please contact the ResNet office for advice. |
