As
of Fall 2004, Hofstra University requires end users to register
their computer before using the Hofstra Network or accessing
the Internet. Network registration prevents the spread
of viruses, provides improved network performance, and allows
Hofstra to quickly track down problems as they arise. The actual
registration process is simple and automatic.
Before
you register, you will be asked to do the following:
Insure that you have your Hofstra Network Account (Network
ID) username and password to complete the Registration
page. If you do not know your Network ID or password, stop
in with your photo ID at the ResNet Office located at 110 Student
Center or Calkins Lab, located in Calkins Hall.
You
are responsible for all actions taken on computers registered
in your name. We highly recommend that you only register
your own computer.
Insure
that you have the latest security updates to your operating
system. Please go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
immediately after registering your computer and install
all critical updates and service packs.
Insure that you have installed the auto-updating McAfee Antivirus Enterprise 8.5 Edition software. You can obtain a free copy here: http://www.hofstra.edu/virus.
Please
Note: Before and after the registration process, all
computers attached to the Hofstra network will be scanned for
security vulnerabilities and the presence of up-to-date anti-virus
protection. If a computer fails one of these scans, it will
be automatically placed in a quarantine network (with no Internet
access) until all the problems have been resolved. We highly
recommend that immediately after registering your computer,
you update your anti-virus software and go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to install all critical
updates and service packs.
