How to disable File Sharing in KaZaA or Morpheus |
| |
File Sharing Programs, such as KaZaA and Morpheus, allow users to connect Peer-to-Peer with other users and download files. Unless you choose otherwise, these programs also turn your computer into a server, allowing outside users to download files from your computer.
These 'shared' files being uploaded from your computer violate both Hofstra University's Acceptable Use Guidelines and Federal Copyright Laws. According to Copyright Law as stated in Title 17 of the U.S. Code and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA), users are allowed to download copyrighted material as a backup of files that they currently own.
The law expressly states that users cannot share, or make available by uploading, any copyrighted information without the express written consent of the owner. By allowing users to download movies, music or other copyrighted materials from your computer, you are violating the U.S. Copyright Laws.
Additionally, Hofstra University also clearly states in the Acceptable Use Guidelines (AUG) that users of the Hofstra network are bound by federal and state laws. Also servers are not allowed on the Hofstra network without the consent of the Computer Center. Using programs such as KaZaA, Morpheus, Gnutella, can turn your computer into a server, which also violates Hofstra University's AUG.
This document will help users abide by Federal Law and Hofstra University's Policies by showing users how to disable File Sharing so other users cannot download from your computer.
This document addresses the two most common File Sharing Programs: KaZaA and Morpheus. |
