• Wireless specification:
  • Hofstra's current wireless service is compatible with most 802.11b wireless devices.
  • User login/authentication is required to access most services on Hofstra's wireless network.
  • A web browser capable of 128bit encryption is required for successful user login.
  • Current employees and registered students can login using their Hofstra Pride Account (Novell Account) username and password.

• Compatible programs:
  • Any web browser capable of 128bit encryption can be used to access the Internet through Hofstra's wireless network. Access to the following websites do not require network authentication, all other websites require user login.

  • Most programs that runs over a wired network will run on Hofstra's wireless network,

Service Limitations:

• SMTP protocol blocked:
  • At this time all SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) traffic is blocked on Hofstra's wireless network. SMTP is the protocol used by many e-mail programs to send mail. If you are using an email client that uses SMTP (examples: Outlook, Eudora, Apple's Mail Client, etc...), you will be able to retrieve mail but you will be unable to send mail. We recommend you use the web interface offered by most providers to access your e-mail.
